PORTLAND PROVIDENCE MEDICAL CENTER COMMUNITY ART GALLERY SHOW

Portland Providence Medical Center at 4805 NE Glisan St, Portland, OR 97213, maintains a community gallery space, curated by Seth Nehil. The gallery is along the corridor between the main atrium lobby information check-in area and the Franz Cancer Center. I am honored that some of my drawings will be on show there from September 16th through November 25th, 2023.
This show is called TAKING A BREATH. It is a collection of abstract(ed) mixed-media works on paper that explore that moment when something catches your eye and makes you stop for a second. Unexpected combinations of color, patterns, scale and perspective encourage a second look. Perhaps a memory or feeling or idea is brought to mind. Perhaps something makes you smile or frown with puzzlement.
Acrylic paint, wax pastel or pencil, and ink are the main media used in these works. Often paint is ragged onto the paper, then various shapes or marks layered on top. The very fine lines are created by scraping off wax pastel using an Xacto knife. A metal etching tool is frequently used to indent the paper and create texture. Nearly always there is some sort of mash up of large bold shapes and tiny hidden details, which ideally tempts people to pause for a moment, and take a breath.
